Why don’t more Americans exercise?

Whole government agencies have been created to assist Americans in loosing weight. The argument is that most diseases arise from poor habits that the American people end up paying for. The kicker is that most Americans know this. We know what makes us fat and or sick and that exercise is good for us yet there are many who only exercise sparingly or not at all? Why?

Freedom

The meaning of freedom is that we all get to decide what we want and what we don’t. As the poster child for freedom, Americans decide on a regular basis that they want another piece of cake and less time at the gym. Freedom is the ability to make choices for ourselves whether good/bad, wise or unwise. If we are going to be a free people than the decision to have another 400 calorie slice of pie is ours to make but the consequence will also be ours along with the responsibility to pay for them.

Excessive and permissive lifestyles

It is believed that Americans have too much of everything, because of this, addictive and excessive lifestyles are common. Fast food restaurants practically line the streets of every major city. Almost every retail establishment provides sweets and sodas of one type or another. So “bad-for-you” foods are accessible to the rich and poor. Not only this but it is permissible and expected to eat what you like, when you like. No one is scorned because they choose the Oreo Blast over a cup of fruit. In this country if you can afford it, you can have it and that is why people keep coming to America.

Insurance Can Help You Be Healthy

You may not think of insurance when you think about being a healthier and happier individual but if you consider the facts, you’ll see why insurance can ensure a healthier you. Think about what it’s like without insurance: you don’t go to the doctor as much and you don’t have regular checkups because, let’s face it, doctor visits are expensive and tests are even more costly on average. However, for a person that has a good insurance plan it is easier to make that trip to the doctor in order to get checked out and examined for any potential problems. You just pay your co-pay and you’re all set. In fact, some insurance plans don’t even have a co-pay and doctor visits for proactive checkups can be at no cost.

This is why it is important to find a plan for you and your family. One way you can do this is by comparing online insurance quotes. This way you can take a look at the different plans and their costs and determine which one is best for you.

With insurance, you are also covered in case of an accident or emergency and that may be the first thing people think of when they consider the reasons to get insurance. Most don’t even consider that regular checkups and exams can ensure that you catch problems before they get out of hand. Some illnesses like cancer can be treated if caught early enough so exams can be a lifesaver. If you have insurance, you can get checked out more often on a regular basis and be aware of anything you need to have taken care of. It simply makes sense to keep yourself healthier and ensure the health of your family is taken care of as well. You won’t regret having insurance when you need it but it’s important to have it even when you don’t think that it’s a necessity.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome – Technology’s “Gift”

It’s true that technology has brought a lot of benefits to our society, but it has also brought its share of issues. One major issue for computer users is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. If you have it, you probably know it; and if you don’t, make sure you take steps to avoid it.

The syndrome occurs when the nerve running from the forearm into the hand (median nerve) compressed at the wrist. The tunnel through which the nerve runs (the carpal tunnel) is narrow and also houses the tendons. We all know that when a nerve is pressed or pinched bad things happen.

Gradually the symptoms will get worse. Starting with tingling or burning around the thumb and index finger, symptoms will progress to decreased strength and throbbing pain. Symptoms often occur at night, and if left untreated can lead to muscle atrophy. Women are much more likely to develop the syndrome than men since the tunnel is usually smaller; but people with metabolic disorders or diabetes are more susceptible.

Ignoring the issue can lead to permanent damage of the median nerve. Physicians utilize specific tests to diagnose the condition while ruling out other causes of wrist pain and numbness. There are various treatments for the syndrome ranging from drugs and exercise to surgery. Depending on the extent of the damage and symptoms, a doctor may recommend wearing a brace and anti-inflammatory drugs. Alternative therapies, such as chiropractic and acupuncture, are unproven but may be helpful in temporarily alleviating the symptoms.

The surgery to release the carpal tunnel is one of the most common procedures performed in the United States today. It can be done endoscopically or through an open incision and involved severing the band of tissue around the wrist to reduce the pressure on the nerve. Therapy and rest usually results in complete recovery.

It’s a decision that not many people, young or old, like to consider. The decision of when to enter an assisted living center is one that no one, no matter how healthy they are, likes to consider.

There are so many stigmas associated with assisted living facilities that people are afraid to consider the possibility of entering one. People feel as if it’s the beginning of the end for their health, as many people enter an assisted living facility and eventually move on to a nursing home. However that isn’t the case at all. Assisted living facilities can be just the beginning of your life.

So how do you tell if it’s time to enter an assisted living facility?

There are many factors that a person can consider when deciding if it’s right to enter an assisted living facility. Here are some questions that you should ask yourself to help you better understand if the time is right to enter an assisted living facility.

Do you feel overwhelmed by daily household chores? Many people feel overwhelmed by the thought of just cutting the lawn, washing the windows, running the vacuum cleaner or other household chores. Assisted living centers take on the majority of the household chores so that it can lessen the daily burden.

Are you having problems remembering to take your medications? Assisted living centers have certified medical staff on hand 24/7. This allows them to make sure that you are getting your medications when you need to take them.

Are you having problems with daily hygiene? Many assisted living centers will help you with washing your hair, trimming your nails or even getting dressed. A degree of independence is needed but the staff is there to help you out should you need it.

3 Ways to Manage Medical Debt

If your medical bills are piling, you have to deal with them rather than try to turn your head the other way. Not paying medical bills can put a big dent in your credit. And, bringing your credit score down isn’t going to do you any favors. Learn how to deal with your medical debt and turn a not so great situation into a manageable one.

Review Health Bills Carefully

Doctor offices, hospitals and even insurance companies can make mistakes. When you receive a bill from a hospital or other health care provider, read the bill carefully. Check for mistakes and accurateness. If you have a question about a charge or why a claim was not paid, then contact the health care provider and the insurance carrier.

Request a Discount

It is not common knowledge, but you can ask doctors and hospitals for a discount on their services. The best way to handle this is up-front before the service is rendered. This works especially well if you do not have health insurance. Even after the fact though, if you receive a bill you cannot afford to pay, call the doctor’s office or hospital. Ask for them to discount the bill amount due and to allow you to make monthly payments to pay off the debt.

Get the Agreement in Writing

When you make an arrangement with the health care provider to reduce the amount of the debt or make payment arrangements, obtain the agreement in writing. This ensures that the doctor or hospital sticks to their end of the agreement and it keeps you in line to stick to your end of the agreement as well. The most important thing about payment arrangements and agreements is that you pay the amount you say you will and when you say you will.

Overeating is a New National Issue

Overeating is an epidemic which has swept across the American landscape like a wildfire in the last few decades. Reminders of the nationally expanding waistline are everywhere for the inquisitive eye to see. Just look at any pictures of a crowd from immediately following World War II until around the early 1980′s. People were slim and trim on average; perhaps a bit stocky here and there, but it is a rare thing to find pictures of very many largely overweight people in the distant past.

Obviously lifestyles contribute, and with the advent of many technological devices, people are able to move less while still inputting the same number of calories daily. Simply picking up the phone and dialing for a pizza delivery is a nearly effortless, common occurrence- and who doesn’t enjoy a pizza? – that burns about three calories. Depending on the size, toppings, and number of slices eaten, that pizza can have anywhere from 1,000 calories up to easily 4,000. It’s not uncommon for people to eat an entire pizza by themselves, even if it’s not at the exact same sitting. That means all those calories get to one person, an example of overeating which was nearly unheard of a few generations ago. It’s commonplace now.

In the past, people were more conscious of the idea of moderation. World War II, with its food scarcities and rationing, taught people to be thoughtful when it came to consumption. As the decades have rolled on, and a feeling of relative safety and abundance has swept the land, people feel more free than ever before to eat with reckless abandon. Add marketing messages which almost constantly push the notion of increased portion size as a good thing, a better value, and the rampant overeating is easy to understand. Remember the idea of moderation when it comes to your food choices, and overeating won’t be your problem!

Better Eating and Weight Management with Tennessee Drug Treatment

When we consider the immense amount of money spent on healthcare and the pharmaceutical industry in the United States, we might assume that Americans are the healthiest people in the world. Our assumption would be wrong.

The American population is becoming obese, to the point of being called an epidemic. Is this because of too much food? Because of a lack of rigor in diet and exercise? Because of too many artificially created foods and livestock stuffed with hormones? Because of the immense amount of sugar ingested by Americans?

When is mass-produced food too much? Chickens raised for fast-food restaurants across the country are grown like plants in barns, without any chance to roam. Cows are raised in huge pens and not allowed to run free across the range. Fruits and vegetables are altered and reduced to one type to fill the demands of a hungry population used to getting what it wants.

Could the obesity problem be due to too many medicines? What studies have been conducted linking weight gain to the use of multiple medications? One wonders if medications may cause abnormal levels of hunger.

For example, Prednisone, a drug for cancer patients, is used to suppress the immune system, and its side effects include increased hunger. What if increased hunger is a general side effect of most pharmaceuticals? What if, in addition to the amazingly poor diet of the average American, prescription and over-the-counter drugs also contribute to increases in appetite?

If Tennessee drug treatment results in reduced ingestion of drugs, perhaps the beneficial side effects will be weight loss, better nutrition, and overall better health.
