Oil glands are connected to pores in your skin and make sebum, and that oil carries dead cells through follicles, and when it gets clogged, acne begins. Most acne is found on shoulders, chest, back, face, and neck. Not usually much of a health threat, it does cause scarring. There are different kinds of pimples such as whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts. Cysts are deep and painful and causes scars.
Not everyone gets pimples, but they are most commonly found in young adults and teenagers. It is estimated that all people between 11 and 30 have had acne breakouts during some point. There are people in the 40 and 50 age group that still get pimples. The cause is not actually known but doctors think there are factors that may cause acne, such as heredity, greasy makeup, medicines, hormonal changes when pregnant, and hormone increases during teen years.
Treatment for acne is done by special doctors called dermatologists that work with problems of the skin. In their treatment they try to heal the pimples, prevent scarring, stop new ones from forming, and reduce embarrassment for the patient. The easiest way to prevent scars is by having early treatment for the condition. The doctor might suggest an over the counter medication or write a prescription. Some prescribed medicines are pills and some you apply right to the skin.
There are ways you should care for your skin. Clean your skin gently using a mild soap or cleanser in morning, after hard workouts, and in the evening. Scrubbing will not stop the acne and can even worsen the problem. Do not touch, squeeze, pick, or pinch pimples because scarring or dark spots can occur on your skin. Shave your face carefully, if using a safety razor be sure to have a sharp blade. Softening up your beard with water and soap before shaving helps too. Many acne treatments make it easier to sunburn so try to stay away from the sun. Choose makeup that is oil free and shampoo hair often or daily if hair tends to be oily.
