Why Physicals Matter

Women often make the mistake, especially at a younger age, of thinking that the routine physical exam is something that doesn’t need to be done for them. They think that their reproductive system is in working order as long as they aren’t experience any symptoms that would otherwise give them cause for concern. It’s a shame that they don’t know the reality but the reality is that women need to be examined yearly to promote good vaginal health.

For instance a simply gynecological exam could reveal that a woman has vaginal warts. Now, a simple look in the mirror or internal self exam would not make this apparent to the woman. You need the testing and keen understanding of the female body that a doctor possesses. Something like these internal vaginal warts could end up causing a lot of problems down the road. That includes infertility and cancer.

The issue with women is the same as men, that because they aren’t seeing it then it must not be there but blood test would reveal the things that you would need to know. Going to get a routine blood test would reveal that the vitamin d supply is low for women and that they need to be taking a supplement. Without it there would be no indication and therefore no treatment.

Getting a routine physical matter to the overall state of their health and ignoring only causes further complications down the road. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that it’s ok to ignore your own health. If you have to do it as part of a group of women who go and get their screening then do so but it’s too important of an issue that you cannot pass it up. Find a local doctor and set up your appointment today.

The Rise Of Clinics

For those that are uninsured it can be a very stressful time when you get sick. You want to feel better more than anything but all you can see is the pains of going to the hospital. There are really long wait times. You end up paying a lot for the services and with the overcrowding of so many hospitals its likely you could not get seen at all. It’s a time where you wish you were insured. These days there clinics are all the rage for the uninsured as well as the insured. It’s becoming commonplace for you to go to a clinic instead of a hospital or a doctors office. Here are a few reasons why people are making the switch.

Less Waiting

As clinics, especially pharmacy retail clinics, rise in use there will be increased wait times but at this point in time it makes the most sense to go to these places. Most of what you are coming in for is something that can be handled by a licensed nurse practitioner. Going to see a primary care physician or to a hospital will be a far greater wait time. It makes the most sense.

Cheaper By A Wide Margin

Going to a doctors office is a not a cheap endeavor and that is why it makes sense to go to a clinic instead. Some insurance carriers will give you a discounted rate or a lower co-pay for going to see a nurse where her rates aren’t nearly as high as the doctors. Even if you don’t have insurance it makes good financial sense to do it. If you are treating something simply that might only require an anti-biotic then going to a clinic is going to be your best bet. Getting well takes money and a clinic is a great bargain.

The Role of The Mother in Women's Health

Mothers have an incredibly important role in the home to educate their daughters on good health and good healthcare. From a very young age it’s important to teach your kids good examples. Kids will imitate what you do and think it’s the proper way to behave. The same goes for the values and the principles you instill in them when it comes to their healthcare. A daughter will lean on their mother as time goes on and there is an increase in dialog between the mother and the daughter. It’s at that time then where the principles really need to be enforced, from everything to sex to visits to the gynecologist there needs to be a mother’s influence.

You want to start with them early, especially on education. Once a girl has hit the age where she begins to get her menstrual cycle there is an obligation by the mom to not only explain the girl what that means in a social and lifestyle sense but also what it means as far as a clinical sense. A child might not be aware that there are drugs out there that can help regulate and control the duration of your cycle.

Explaining the inner workings of the female reproductive system is a good start but your daughter needs to be aware of the importance of taking care of those body parts as a way to not only increase the odds that she would be able to have kids if she chose to do so but also that she would be susceptible to disease and cancer if she doesn’t monitor it. You can’t discredit the education a girl needs about her own body. The issues she could face as an adult could be great if she doesn’t take care of herself now. A mother’s voice is vital here.

Kiss and Make Up

Assorted cosmetics and tools
Image via Wikipedia

Any denizen of the theater knows all about the importance of make-up. Yes, formerly thought solely the domain of those wishing to prettify themselves, it turns out make-up serves another purpose, for dramatic effect no less. Theater strives to create a certain kind of atmosphere that aims for exaggeration of metaphor, character type and even features – this extends even to a kind of lighting that tends to wash out faces and make the actors’ expressions unreadable. That’s no good for something that demands as much physical performance and expression as line-delivery.

Make-up solves that problem, adding color and definition – even exaggeration – to the features that would be washed out otherwise. With make-up, the audience can see every eyebrow raised and every facial twitch that are so critical for conveying real acting. But what’s the actor to do when the show’s over and there’s a face full of make-up to deal with? Use cold cream, of course. That friend of all those striving for skin care and clean skin is the perfect tool for make-up removal, making it the actor’s best buddy.

You could spend hours trying to wash the make-up off – it doesn’t work very well – but why bother? Just slather on some cold cream, then rub your face with paper towels, and like magic the make-up comes right off. Another coat or two and then a regular wash with soap and water and you’re good to go, with your face feeling fresh and clean to boot! One thing to note. It is called “cold cream” for a reason. The stuff is cold. Be prepared for the shock, but then again, it’s better than the stinky stuff you use on your chest to relieve your sinuses, and at least cold cream doesn’t smell bad. Rejoice! No longer does the wearing of make-up for theatrical purposes pose a problem afterward.

Effects of Cigarette Smoking on a Woman

Though smoking can have an negative impact on anyone’s health, women who smoke are potentially at a greater risk for many different conditions specific for their gender. The hazards of a female smoking go beyond that of the normal factors, such as lung cancer and heart disease.

Women who smoke put themselves in a position where they are at risk for a number of cancers. Cervical cancer is a leading condition for females, and it is increase by the inhalation of cigarette smoke. Breast cancer risks are also increased. It has been known that a female smoker increases her risk of getting breast cancer by up to 75% just for having the addiction.

Menopause and menstruation is also affected by the hazardous chemicals of cigarettes. The smoke can reduce the amount of estrogen in the body, which is a hormone that is responsible for the normal cycle for a woman. Early menopause many experienced by those that begin smoking while they are still teenagers. Problems with ovulation and infertility are also more apparent in those that smoke.

Those who are pregnant and continue to smoke not only put their lives in jeopardy, but also the well being of their growing fetus. Smoking causes a lot of negative effects on an unborn baby, such as miscarriage, low birth weight, and lung problems.

Smoking cessation is really the only way to help a woman lower the chances of contracting a serious health condition. Smoking can affect the body in numerous ways. The amount of cigarettes used each day can also determine how at risk a female is at getting these ailments. No one has determined a “safe amount” of cigarettes a day, and it is highly unlikely that there is a number that is safe other than zero. For this reason, it is important that you quit smoking immediately.

Facts Regarding Birth Control

Women’s healthcare has become more effective in promoting birth control and the various forms of contraception available for those that choose to be sexually active. However, continued education is necessary to inform those that are becoming older and wish to participate in sex. The different types of birth control offer women choices when it comes to preventing an unwanted pregnancy. There are many facts associated with birth control, and the numbers

It has been proven that certain traits that females possess can lead to more unwanted pregnancies. Women without a high school diploma, for example, may become pregnant faster or more times than a female who completed high school. The idea here is that the person with the lower education was not properly informed on her choices and methods that could be used to prevent the pregnancy. Lower socioeconomic classes and younger aged women also fall into this category, which could also be due to misinformation or lack of education about birth control.

A study on pregnant women was conducted in 1994 that states there were about 6 million pregnancies during that year. Over half of these were designated as unwanted babies. Of these pregnancies, almost 2 million were terminated by an elected abortion. It is not known how many of these women were on birth control before becoming pregnant, but the data shows that it is possible to assume many of them were not trying to prevent the pregnancy.

That is not to say that birth control is 100% effective. Each method comes with its own failure rate. The only way to completely prevent a pregnancy is to refrain from having sexual intercourse. Withdrawal (or “pulling out”) comes with the highest rate of failure, while pills and patches have a less chance of not working for the woman that is using them. The most effective forms of birth control have been concluded to be an IUD or other implant.

Use Electronic Cigarettes to Kick an Unhealthy Habit

Smoking Revolution - Electric Cigarette

Smoking cigarettes is rude, unhealthy, and it’s getting harder to do all the time. Many restaurants, bars and other public places do not allow cigarette smoking. Cigarettes turn teeth yellow and reduce lung capacity. There is even evidence to suggest it may affect nearby secondhand smokers. Don’t hang on to a dirty, expensive habit. Purchase electronic cigarettes to kick the habit. Quitting is the healthy decision, and electronic cigarettes are a clean, safe alternative.

Electronic cigarettes look and feel like the real deal. Water vapor and nicotine are inside the electronic cigarette, but no carcinogens, tar or tobacco. None of the cancer-causing agents found in traditional cigarettes are present in the electronic version. Smokers will hold and puff their cigarette, as usual, but they won’t be endangering their lives by doing so. A small amount of nicotine provides the addictive substance that smokers crave.

By no means should electronic cigarettes be a lifelong alternative to kicking the smoking habit, but they can be a lifeline for those who want to quit. Often, smokers miss the motion of smoking and miss having something to hold in their hand. The electronic cigarette provides the addictive nicotine users need to help them get over the habit as well as the psychological comfort that comes with the smoking act. There is no patch to wear, no tasteless gum to chew, no tiny sensors to put onto the body…there is only a clean cigarette that won’t be an ugly health risk. Some electronic cigarettes are even customizable, so smokers can make their quitting tool look exactly like the brand of cigs they usually smoke. Sometimes, smokers need just a little help to quit. You can purchase electronic cigarette kits online and in some specialty stores.

What Puts a Women at Risk for Breast Cancer?

Women are much more likely to develop breast cancer for men. While there is not one factor that puts a certain female at more risk of developing the serious condition, there are a few different things that can help promote the chances of getting the cancer. It is important that you are aware of these, as well as the steps that you can take to help reduce your chances of being at risk for breast cancer.

The family history of a woman can reveal that she is more at risk of developing breast cancer. Close family members, including mother, daughter, or sister, who have suffered from this form of cancer make the woman in question a lot more susceptible to the condition. The reason for this is that the cancer stems from two genetic mutations in the body, which can be seen in multiple members of the same family. Thankfully, however, women can be screened for these mutations in hopes of detecting a risk of breast cancer before it can begin.

Getting older is probably the biggest risk factor for women getting breast cancer. Over 85 percent of breast cancer cases are related to females who are over the age of 50. Less than 5% is associated with women 30 years of age or younger. The key to keep your risk of breast cancer down as you age is proper screenings as well as keeping yourself healthy.

Other than screenings, there are a number of ways that you can help to lower your chances of getting breast cancer. Breastfeeding after childbirth is beneficial in keeping your breasts healthy and to reduce the likelihood of cancer. A hysterectomy to remove the ovaries will also reduce the risks. Eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and maintaining a healthy weight after menopause will also help.

Student Health Insurance

LOS ANGELES, CA - OCTOBER 6: Activists with H...

When you send your child off to college, you may soon find out that they are no longer covered by your health insurance policy. In other situations, the student may not have health insurance coverage at all. The good news is that there are student health insurance options to consider to make sure your college student still receives the health care they need to live a healthy life while away from home. Here are the factors you need to consider when determining what type of student health insurance coverage you need.

Review the Policy Benefits

You always have the option to establish an individual health insurance plan for the student. Some carriers have special policies that are specifically geared toward the needs of college students, with lower premiums and less coverage options. Since the benefits of the policy can vary greatly from carrier to carrier and even from policy to policy, make sure you fully understand benefits such as the maximum amount of coverage from the policy; the amount of the deductible you have to meet annually; uncovered medical expenses and procedures; doctor restrictions; specialist restrictions; policy coverage area or region; premium costs; and other costs.

Student Health Clinics

Another thing to consider is that many college and university campuses have their own student health clinics. These clinics deal with health care issues that range from birth control to the flu. These clinics are not set up to handle everything that pops up however. Rather than be totally dependent on the health clinic services, set up some kind of health care insurance coverage that supplements what the students can obtain from on-campus sources.
Some college and university alumni and student associations also offer short-term health insurance coverage. These are primary major medical policies, so it covers the costs for major medical emergencies but doesn’t bode well for wellness check-ups and visits to the doctor for the flu.
