Multiple addiction recovery programs are available to help an individual overcome addictive behavior. Some look on addictions as only a bad habit that needs to be broken. An addiction is much more than a simple bad habit. An addiction is a bad habit that has morphed into a destructive behavior with a life that is eternal. An individual under the power of an addiction loses perspective of his or her behavior and how it’s destroying his or her life and the lives of those around the addict. The tendrils of addiction entwine themselves in the thoughts and actions and relations of the the addict. There is not a part of the addict’s life that is not impacted.

Addiction recovery programs have multiple tactics to untangle the web of addictions. The programs usually take the addict out of his or her environment to detoxify and unwind the complicated knots that have been created in the individual’s life. Some addiction recovery programs utilize the 12-step system and some have new innovative programs which the program director has put together himself or herself. There are many programs tackling addictions from different angles but one thing that they all have in common is total abstinence under medical surveillance.

Individuals who are addicted to drugs or alcohol may end up in a recovery program because concerned family and friends have staged an intervention. Other addicts realize that they need help and check themselves into an addiction recovery program. At some point the addict has to take responsibility for his or her addiction if the addiction recovery program does its work.

Addiction recovery programs usually admit that their program is a starting place, not an ending point for the recovering addict.
The addict will have to learn to say many times during the recovery process, “whatever it takes”.
